| Hi All – International Women’s Day will be marked worldwide by events and celebrations this weekend. In the USA hundreds of rallies have been planned. On Saturday, please join us at the VFW Plaza in Hastings at 12 noon. We will have speakers, music, and an “open mic” so that all who wish to speak can do so. We’ve also added an action item to our rally, asking attendees to chip in to contribute to “Hope’s Door” Domestic Abuse Treatment Center in Hawthorne, NY. To learn more, and for any late announcements, please sign up for our rally at The Women’s March.
Coming at the outset of what may be a long war in the Middle East, International Women’s Day reminds us that women and children comprise most of the victims of modern war. Whether killed or injured, whether serving as aid workers or trying to help their family survive, women bare the brunt of stupid wars for which they have little responsibility for bringing into being. The murder of 165 young girls at an Iranian school kicked off the present war. The suffering of tens of thousands of women and children during Israel’s genocide in Gaza continues. War is a women’s issue. Defending women and women’s rights are among the many reasons to prevent and to stop wars.
Concerned Families of Westchester holds a peace & justice vigil or rally every Saturday at noon in Hastings. TOMORROW we hope that several hundred people will join us to mark International Women’s Day. All of our rallies seek to highlight the voices of those engaged in the struggle, and tomorrow our “featured speakers” will be women from Westchester whose work for community betterment, for a better world, will be of interest to all. And as usual, we will also have an “open mic,” giving women and their allies 60 seconds to tell us what they are thinking, feeling, and doing to bring a better world closer.
The rally will begin at noon at the VFW Plaza in the center of Hastings (Warburton Ave. and Spring St.) It will go until 1:30 pm. We will have some good music. If you wish to speak, please look for the “Sign Up Here” pole. And please BRING A SIGN! Put your idea/demand on paper for all the world to see. This will be one of hundreds of rallies taking place across the USA and around the world this weekend. Let’s make ours a great one!

LEARN A LITTLE ABOUT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY ---- International Women’s Day traces it origins to a parade launched by the US Socialist Party in New York City in 1909, It built on successful strikes by women garment workers. In 1910 the cause was taken up by socialist women in Europe, making Women’s Day part of the agendas of member parties of the “Second International.” In 1917, a Women’s Day rally in Russia, protesting high wartime food prices, kicked off the Russian Revolution. Following the war, International Women’s Day came to be celebrated throughout the world. For an excellent summary, check out the very good Wikipedia article.
