CFOW Newsletter - Forced Starvation for Thousands in Gaza - Who Cares?

Concerned Families of Westchester Newsletter
February 11, 2024

Hello All – There are 2 million people in Gaza.  The UN says that 500,000 of them are starving, and will die unless emergency food relief arrives soon.  A ceasefire is necessary to allow food relief into Gaza.  Our government should work for an immediate ceasefire so that thousands of people – most of them children – won't starve.

Over the weekend, Israel announced that it now plans to do just the wrong thing – to attack the southern city of Rafah, the portal for food entering Gaza.  The one million people in Rafah have nowhere to flee where they won't be bombed. They can choose death by starvation or death by bombing. The Biden administration pouts and says it does not support this unless Israel comes up with a plan to "safely" move a million people to a "safe" place.  Despite the persistent rejection of US words of caution by the Netanyahu government, the Biden people show no sign of taking action that might prevent massacre and genocide.

The International Court of Justice has declared that genocide is probably happening in Gaza, and that ALL nations should take steps to prevent it.  What does this mean for the US?  Our government now provides money, bombs and weapons, and diplomatic support for Israel at the UN (the veto).  International law requires that our government should end its complicity in Israel's genocide.  Gaza is a complicated situation, but the simple first step – after which more will follow – is a ceasefire.

Please join the antiwar protests.  For starters, call the White House (202) 456-1111; Rep. Bowman (202) 225-2464; Sen. Gillibrand (202) 224-4451 and Sen. Schumer (202)224-6542. Just say you want a CEASEFIRE NOW FOR GAZA.  Thanks.

An Israeli Incursion Into Gaza's Rafah Will Be an Unprecedented Humanitarian Catastrophe
By Gideon Levy, Haaretz [Israel] [February 11, 2024]
---- All we can do now is to request, beg, cry out: Don't enter Rafah. An Israeli incursion into Rafah will be an attack on the world's biggest displaced persons camp. It will drag the Israeli military into committing war crimes of a severity that even it has not yet committed. It is impossible to invade Rafah now without committing war crimes. If the Israel Defense Forces invades Rafah, the city will become a charnel house. … There is also nowhere to evacuate these millions of people. In the devastated Gaza Strip, there is nowhere left to go. If the Rafah refugees are moved to Al-Mawasi, as the IDF will propose in its humanitarian plan, Al-Mawasi will become the site of a humanitarian disaster the likes of which we haven't seen in the Strip. … The Israeli public must wake up, and with it the Biden administration. This is an emergency more dire than any other during this war. The Americans must block the invasion of Rafah with actions, not words. Only they can stop Israel. [Read More]

If the Israeli Army Invades Rafah, What Will Be of More Than 1.5 Million Palestinians Who Take Shelter There?
By Amira Hass, Haaretz [Israel] [February 10, 2024]
---- Most of the Gaza Strip residents, some 1.4 million people, are concentrated in Rafah. Tens of thousands are still fleeing into the city from Khan Yunis, where the fighting continues. The thought that Israel will invade Rafah and that fighting will take place between and near civilians terrifies the city's residents and the internally displaced persons. The terror they feel is augmented by the conclusion that nobody can prevent Israel from carrying out its intention – not even the ICJ ruling that orders Israel to take all measures to avoid acts of genocide. … The following image will repeat itself several times over the next few days: A march of starving and frightened Palestinians starts fleeing in panic each time the IDF announces another area whose residents are supposed to evacuate, while the tanks and infantry troops advance toward them. The shelling and ground troops will get closer to the hospitals that are still functioning. Tanks will surround them, and all the patients and medical teams will be required to evacuate to the crowded Al-Mawasi area. [Read More]

Let Them Eat Dirt
By Chris Hedges [February 8, 2024]
---- There was never any possibility that the Israeli government would agree to a pause in the fighting proposed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, much less a ceasefire. Israel is on the verge of delivering the coup de grĂ¢ce in its war on Palestinians in Gaza – mass starvation. When Israeli leaders use the term "absolute victory," they mean total decimation, total elimination. The Nazis in 1942 systematically starved the 500,000 men, women and children in the Warsaw Ghetto. This is a number Israel intends to exceed. … More than half a million Palestinians – one in four – are starving in Gaza, according to the U.N. Starvation will soon be ubiquitous. Palestinians in Gaza, at least 1.9 million of whom have been internally displaced, lack not only sufficient food, but clean water, shelter and medicine. There are few fruits or vegetables. There is little flour to make bread. [Read More]

Bernie Sanders: "The International Billionaire Class Is Making Out Like Bandits"
By Sen. Bernie Sanders [adapted from a speech Senator Bernie Sanders gave at the Center for International Policy in Washington, D.C., on February 6, 2024.]
---- I am here today because I strongly believe that in Congress some of the most important issues facing our country and the world are rarely debated in a serious manner. Whether it is our corrupt political process dominated by billionaires, whether it's a dysfunctional healthcare system, whether it is an educational system failing millions of young people, whether it is massive income and wealth inequality in America, whether it is the fact that real wages have been stagnant for the last 50 years, there has been a lack of serious debate on some of the most important issues impacting our people. And that is certainly true in the area of foreign policy. [Read More]

Full Speed Ahead on the Global Titanic. Going Along with the Utter Madness of Nuclear Weapons
By Norman Solomon, TomDispatch [February 8, 2024]
---- Yes, the Doomsday Clock keeps ticking — it's now at 90 seconds to midnight, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists — but the ultimate time bomb never gets the attention that it deserves. Even as the possibility of nuclear annihilation looms, this century's many warning signs retain the status of Cassandras. Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump withdrew the United States from vital pacts between the U.S. and Russia, the two nuclear superpowers, shutting down the Anti-Ballistic Missile, Open Skies, and Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaties. And despite promising otherwise, Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden did nothing to revive them. Under the buzzword "modernization," the American government, a thermonuclear colossus, spent $51 billion last year alone updating and sustaining its nuclear arsenal, gaining profligate momentum in a process that's set to continue for decades to come. "Modernizing and maintaining current nuclear warheads and infrastructure is estimated to cost $1.7 trillion through Fiscal Year 2046," the office of Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) pointed out, "while the Congressional Budget Office anticipates that current nuclear modernization would cost $494 billion through Fiscal Year 2028." (Video) Colonial Law and the Erasure of Palestine
International law professor Noura Erakat interviewed by Chris Hedges, The Real News Network [February 4, 2024]
---- In Palestine, the law has been used as a tool of oppression to legitimize and advance the dispossession of the Palestinian people for more than a century. From the theft of Palestinian land by legal mechanisms to the non-recognition of Palestinians as a people with the inalienable right of self-determination, the law is yet another weapon wielded against the Palestinian people by Israel and its patrons. Activist, attorney, and Rutgers University professor Noura Erakat joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the use of lawfare against Palestine and her new book, Justice for Some: Law and the Question of Palestine. The War on Gaza
Instead of Diplomacy and Peace, US Chooses to Back Genocide and War
By Medea Benjamin and Nicolas J.S. Davies, Code Pink [February 8, 2024]
---- On February 7, 2024, a U.S. drone strike assassinated an Iraqi militia leader, Abu Baqir al-Saadi, in the heart of Baghdad. This was a further U.S. escalation in a major new front in the U.S.-Israeli war on the Middle East, centered on the Israeli genocide in Gaza, but already also including ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Syria, and the U.S. and U.K.'s bombing of Yemen. … At the same time, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been touring the shrinking number of capitals in the region where leaders will still talk to him, playing the United States' traditional role as a dishonest broker between Israel and its neighbors, in reality partnering with Israel to offer the Palestinians impossible, virtually suicidal terms for a ceasefire in Gaza. The position of the United States and Israel today is that ending a massacre that has already killed more than 27,700 people is not a serious option, even after the International Court of Justice has ruled it a plausible case of genocide. (Video) Jeremy Scahill: Israel Has Waged a "Deliberate Propaganda Campaign" to Justify Brutal Gaza Assault
From Democracy Now! [February 7, 2024]
---- The United States and more than a dozen other countries quickly moved to suspend funding to UNRWA, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, a vital lifeline for millions of people in Gaza, shortly after Israel accused a handful of the agency's staff of taking part in the Hamas attack on October 7. But the U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 obtained the intelligence dossier on UNRWA that Israel shared with allied countries, and found "no evidence to support its explosive new claim." The Financial Times and Sky News also reviewed the materials and came to the same conclusion. Israel's claims about UNRWA are just the latest example of what journalist Jeremy Scahill says is a "deliberate propaganda campaign" to justify its brutal assault on Gaza. "This is one of the most epic frauds in modern history, reminiscent of the lies told to explain and justify the invasion and occupation of Iraq," says Scahill, senior reporter and correspondent at The Intercept. From Democracy Now! [February 5, 2024]
---- We discuss the possibility of wider war with Matt Duss, a former foreign policy adviser to Senator Bernie Sanders, now with the Center for International Policy. "The Biden administration's strategy here is failing," says Duss. Voter outrage over its unwavering pro-Israel stance is "incandescent" and on track to harm the president's reelection campaign as Democratic Party members pull back on get-out-the-vote efforts, while some may refuse to vote at all. "The issue of Israel-Palestine is not just a foreign policy issue. It is an issue of social and racial justice," explains Duss. "This is going to be fixed, if it can be fixed at all, by changing policy and ending support for this massacre." [See the Program]

Israel-based civil society and human rights organizations call for a ceasefire
[FB – Some 3-dozen human rights organizations issued the following statement on February 7, 2024.]
---- We, the undersigned Israel-based civil society and human rights organizations, call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and demand the immediate release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip. An immediate ceasefire will prevent further loss of civilian lives and facilitate access to vital aid for Gaza to address the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe there. … We thus call on all parties to reach an immediate ceasefire and we call upon Israel to allow unfettered entry and delivery of humanitarian aid and goods into and throughout Gaza, as directed to do by the International Court of Justice. Hamas must unconditionally release all people taken hostage on October 7. We call on the international community to uphold its legal obligation to restore respect for international humanitarian law and protect civilians. The international community must ensure that all those responsible for grave violations of international humanitarian and human rights law be held accountable. These steps are vital for ensuring human rights and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike. [Read More]

The Gaza War and The Mainstream Media
What the Israeli Public Doesn't See
By Elisheva Goldberg, Jewish Currents [February 7, 2024]
---- On January 29th, The Nightly News with Michal Rabinovitch—which airs on Israel's public broadcaster, known as Kan—ran a series of stories that were broadly representative of the channel's programming over the past few months. … Notably absent from this coverage of the war and its reverberations was any mention of the killing of Palestinian civilians, or of the perils now facing the more than 2 million people trapped in the besieged enclave—including not only Israel's military campaign, but also famine, thirst, displacement, and lack of medical care. In most Israeli media coverage, "it is as if [Palestinian civilians] don't exist," Gideon Levy, a reporter for the left-leaning Israeli daily Haaretz, which has covered the plight of Palestinians in Gaza, told the progressive American news program Democracy Now!. On international news networks, "you see Gaza. You see children dying on the dirty floors of the hospitals, bleeding to death. You see the uprooted people, you see the destruction, you see the suffering . . . and the starvation," Levy said. "In Israel you see only the soldiers, only the hostages."Some media analysts have warned that this absence is shaping Israeli public opinion.[Read More]

First time world exceeds 1.5C warming limit over 12-month period
---- For the first time on record, global warming has exceeded temperatures of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) over a 12-month period, European climate monitors have said, in what scientists called a "warning to humanity".  … In 2015, almost 200 governments signed the unprecedented Paris climate agreement to phase out fossil fuels in favour of renewable energy in the second half of the century. Countries around the world face critical questions about leaving fossil fuels behind; adapting our transportation infrastructure, housing stock, and farming practices to increasingly harsh weather; and protecting the people most at risk. … Despite the moment of peril we are living through—a moment felt especially acutely by young people looking to their futures—news outlets around the world are largely sidelining the climate conversation, contributing to the sense among young people that journalism isn't covering the issues they most care about. Our History
'Hit the Line Hard'
By Jake Nevins, The New York Review of Books [February 12, 2023]
---- During the cold war, football's violence became precisely its point. … American football as a shorthand for endangered national values—patriotism, virtue, loyalty—did not begin with the cold war. … Cast against the threat of communism, football became the site of a struggle over the American family and, more pointedly, American boys, whom politicians often crudely identified as the last bastion of defense against Soviet risks to the "American way of life," a euphemism for the free enterprise system and the nuclear family unit. The cold war, moreover, was by its nature patriotically unsatisfying, involving no concrete displays of military prowess or superiority, only the fear that the United States had been both outpaced and infiltrated. For legislators, then, and for the youth football coaches with whom they explicitly aligned themselves, football was a theater for muscular nationalism, throwing the perceived softness of containment policy into relief. CFOW Newsletter - Gaza is on the brink of Famine. Will the US step up?

Concerned Families of Westchester Newsletter
February 4, 2024

Hello All – A week ago the International Court of Justice (ICJ) warned that Israel's war against Gaza may be a genocide, and directed Israel and its supporters to prevent this.  Already, some 100,000 Gazans have been killed or injured.  Thousands of children have been killed or have been made orphans. There are no working hospitals, no housing, just rubble and the winter cold.  Now Gaza faces famine.

As Alex de Waal explains in his article linked below, "Gaza is experiencing mass starvation like no other in recent history. Before the outbreak of fighting in October, food security in Gaza was precarious, but very few children – less than 1% – suffered severe acute malnutrition, the most dangerous kind. Today, almost all Gazans, of any age, anywhere in the territory, are at risk."  Starvation and near-starvation will weaken people, especially children and the elderly, making them more susceptible to disease, and to the effects of winter homelessness.  According to UN sources, some 700,000 people sheltering in UN buildings suffer from infectious diseases.

Starvation and disease are part of the warning of imminent genocide issued by the International Court of Justice a week ago.  Was it a coincidence that, on the day that the Court issued its ruling, the United States – at the urging of Israel – "paused" its support for the UN program that is feeding almost the entire Gazan population?  The US action was followed by more than a dozen US/Israel allies; and UNRWA – the UN agency in question – has announced that it will not be able to continue its programs beyond the end of February.

Stopping famine in Gaza means a ceasefire, so that food and other aid can be distributed.  Please call the White House (202-456-1111), Senators Schumer (202-224-6542) and Gillibrand (202-224-4451) and Rep. Bowman (202-225-2464). Tell the phone person that you want a ceasefire to prevent famine. Thank you.

The World Needs to Stand by UNRWA
By
[FB - Mr. Eide is the foreign minister of Norway.]
---- The main lifeline for Gazans in this landscape is the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, or UNRWA, the nearly 75-year-old agency that is almost entirely funded by voluntary contributions. Now, at least 15 countries, including the United States, have announced a halt to payments to UNRWA, pending an investigation, because of Israeli intelligence reports that a dozen of its workers took part in the terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.Now is exactly the wrong time to halt funding for UNRWA. Norway is standing fast to our commitment to continue funding this crucial agency and to the Palestinian people. As the Norwegian foreign minister, I urge fellow donor countries to reflect on the wider consequences of cutting UNRWA off. If these decisions are not reversed, we run a serious risk of worsening the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. And since UNRWA also supports millions of Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, a stop to payments could further destabilize an already extremely volatile region. The world should keep funding UNRWA on more than practical grounds, however. We should not collectively punish millions of people for the alleged deeds of a few. [Read More]

Unless Israel changes course, it could be legally culpable for mass starvation
By Alex de Waal, The Guardian [UK] [January 31, 2024]
---- Gaza is on the brink of famine. If the US and UK fail to use every possible lever to stop the catastrophe, they will be complicit. Gaza is experiencing mass starvation like no other in recent history. Before the outbreak of fighting in October, food security in Gaza was precarious, but very few children – less than 1% – suffered severe acute malnutrition, the most dangerous kind. Today, almost all Gazans, of any age, anywhere in the territory, are at risk. There is no instance since the second world war in which an entire population has been reduced to extreme hunger and destitution with such speed. And there's no case in which the international obligation to stop it has been so clear. [Read More]

News Notes
The steady fall of President Biden's poll numbers has been attributed to the opposition to Biden's support of Israel's war on Gaza.  The fall is concentrated among young people and minorities, not least Arab Americans, not least those living in Dearborn, Michigan and environs.  A loss of Michigan may well cost Biden the presidency.  What's happening there?  Last week Democracy Now! interviewed Dearborn's mayor and some Arab-American activists.  The program also interviewed pollster James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute. See the Program; we have been warned.

For the second year in a row, the Doomsday Clock has been set—by scientists analyzing the dangers faced by Planet Earth due to human exploitation and nuclear-armed geopolitics—at 90 seconds to midnight. Palestine Is in Asia: An Asian American Argument for Solidarity
By Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Nation [January 29, 2024]
---- For Asian Americans, among whom I count myself, the question of Palestine holds great relevance. And for writers, among whom I also count myself, the question of when to speak our conscience has always mattered. I want to address Israel's war on Gaza and how it raises issues of self-defense, inclusion, and solidarity that have great meaning for anyone who has been classified as an "other" and for anyone who has sought to write through that otherness. This includes Asian American, Palestinian, Israeli, and Jewish writers—all of whom have grappled with what it means to be the monstrous other. … I return to my own otherness. Being Asian American is not the only dimension of myself. It is just one aspect, born from defending myself and others seen to be like me. But my Asian Americanness matters less than my ethics, politics, and art. Together, they constitute a repository of a stubborn otherness that resists the lure of a domesticated otherness satiated by belonging. [Read More]

Who Is Marwan Barghouti, and Why Is He Israel's Most Important Prisoner?
By Jo-Ann Mort, The New Republic [January 30, 2024]
---- Many Palestinians and Israelis consider him the only person who can lead the way to a two-state solution. Maybe that's why Netanyahu won't release him. Marwan Barghouti is Israel's most celebrated prisoner and, by all accounts, the person most likely to succeed Palestinian Authority president and PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas whenever the Palestinian Authority—and the PLO—holds elections. … There is faint hope that he could be released soon, as part of a deal with Hamas for the Israeli hostages. More likely, he will be released by a post-Netanyahu government if there is any hope for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian crisis. There is simply no other leader who can deliver this scenario. Indeed, his prisoner status gives him extraordinary gravitas among the Palestinian people. He is also seen as not corrupt, unlike the current leadership of Abbas and those around him. [Read More]

A Historic Junction. The Israeli left after October 7.
With Sally Abed, et al., Dissent [Winter 2024]
---- [By Dissent Editor Joshua Leifer] - After more than two months of intensive bombardment, Israel's war in Gaza continues to exact a terrible human toll. As of this writing, Israeli forces have killed close to 20,000 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians. According to the United Nations, roughly 1.8 million people, or 80 percent of Gaza's population, have been internally displaced since the war's start. Within Israel, an atmosphere of tension, fear, and anger prevails. … Against this backdrop, and despite mounting repression, left-wing Israeli organizers and anti-occupation activists have begun to return to the streets. Their demand: a ceasefire and a deal to free all the hostages. On December 6, I spoke with three left-wing Israeli activist-thinkers about the challenges facing the Israeli left right now. Inside the Israel Lobby's New $90 Million War Chest

---- In the wake of the Oct. 7 attacks on southern Israel, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has reaped a $90 million fundraising haul, according to confidential internal documents reviewed by The Lever. …  From January to September 2023, the non-public documents show that AIPAC received an average of around $12 million in monthly pledged donations. By contrast, in October alone, the documents show that AIPAC received more than triple that amount — more than $40 million in pledged donations. In the following two months, donors pledged another nearly $50 million. [Read More]

The Anti-Defamation League: Israel's Attack Dog in the US
By James Bamford, The Nation [January 31, 2024]
---- The problem is that The New York Times, PBS, and other mainstream outlets that reach millions are constantly and uncritically promoting the ADL and amplifying the group's questionable charges. At the same time, they regularly fail to inform their readers, viewers, and listeners either about the organization's current shift towards silencing Israel's critics or its long history of deception, lying, and corruption—including covert operations and illegal spying on innocent Americans. A greater awareness of this history—and of the ADL's ongoing attempts to silence critics of the war in Gaza via slanderous and often untrue charges—might suggest that, instead of simply repeating those charges, a less-credulous media might want to examine the group's long-standing (but carefully hidden) links to the Israeli government. And whether the ADL's spying and covert operations are really all in the past. [Read More]

Western coverage of Gaza: A textbook case of coloniser's journalism
By Vidya Krishnan, Aljazeera [February 2, 2024]
---- Since the beginning of the latest Israeli assault on the besieged Palestinian enclave – which is proving to be one of the swiftest ethnic cleansing efforts in history – Western news organisations have repeatedly published unsubstantiated claims, told one side of the story and glossed over violence selectively to justify Israel's violations of international law and shield it from scrutiny. In doing so, Western journalists have abandoned basic standards in their coverage of Israel's conduct towards Palestinians. None of this is new. The failures of Western journalism have helped Israel justify its occupation and violence against Palestinians for over 75 years. [Read More]

A Wider War?
(Video) Biden's Middle East Policy "Leading Us into a War Whose Aims We Have Not Defined"
From Democracy Now! [January 31, 2024]
---- President Biden says he holds Iran responsible for the drone killing of three U.S. soldiers at a base in Jordan and that he has decided on a U.S. response. Tehran has denied any involvement in the attack and threatened to "decisively respond" to any U.S. retaliation. Responsibility for the strike was claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a term used to describe a loose coalition of militias that oppose U.S. support for Israel's assault on Gaza. "This is leading us into a war whose aims we have not defined, whose exit we cannot envision," says Trita Parsi, the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, who warns that "continued warfare in Gaza by the Israelis is a direct threat to U.S. national interests." ---- President Joe Biden could easily avoid the necessity of bombing Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and the good Lord knows how many other countries in the region. He just has to do three things to make US troop secure in the region.

1. He could cut Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu off from resupply of armaments and ammunition, forcing a ceasefire in Gaza;

2. Biden could just pull the US troops out of Syria. It is crazy that they are still there. They only total 900, spread across three small forward operating bases. Bring them home; and

3. Biden could also withdraw the 2,500 US troops from Iraq. The Iraqi parliament voted against their continued presence in January 2020, so they are there illegally, as well. They are also exposed and vulnerable.

Presto change-o, the extreme tensions and crisis that threaten to draw the US into a wider war would likely evaporate. [Read More]

The War in Ukraine
Two Years Into the Ukraine War, Europe Has No Strategy
By Harrison Stetler, Jacobin [February 2024]
---- On Thursday, European leaders released another €50 billion in funding for Ukraine. The funds are a lifeline for the Ukrainian military — but waning US support and the stalemate on the front line are chipping away at Europe's commitment to Kyiv. … With the Russia-Ukraine conflict descending into a near-hopeless war of attrition in recent months, support for Kyiv from the United States and Europe has appeared increasingly fragile. In Washington, Ukraine funding is caught in the mire of Republican efforts to exact steep concessions from congressional Democrats and the Biden administration on immigration. …But another round of propping up Ukraine's defenses will not make up for the glaring absence of a serious strategic debate about where this conflict is going and what is to be expected of Europe's investment in it. The Climate Crisis
New Evidence Reveals Fossil Fuel Industry Sponsored Climate Science in 1954
By Rebecca John, DeSmog Blog [January 30, 2024]
---- With the discovery of these Air Pollution Foundation documents, it is now possible to date the earliest sponsorship of climate science by the fossil fuel industry to 1954, approximately a quarter of a century before Exxon's internal research program of the late 1970s. These new documents provide important evidence that the fossil fuel industry has been intricately connected to climate science from its earliest beginnings — not only as a driver of the greenhouse effect behind climate change, but also as a contributor to the scientific discoveries that would transform our understanding of humanity's relationship with the Earth and its atmosphere.  [Read More]

The State of the Union
First They Came For the Immigrants
By Max Elbaum,, Convergence Magazine [January 30, 2024]
---- Demonizing immigrants and attacking their rights is at the forefront of today's MAGA assault on the international, multiracial working class, democracy, and basic human decency. Top Republican strategists have decided once again that fearmongering about immigrant "invaders" pouring over US borders is the best formula for winning the 2024 election and implementing their white Christian Nationalist agenda. This is why Republican governors have been dramatizing the movement of people by busing them to "blue" cities; why Texas Republicans are attempting to nullify federal authority and take control of immigration enforcement at "their" borders; why Trump doubles down on saying that immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country." This is why Republicans demand that harsh "border security" measures be the price of approving the already terrible legislation funding military aid to Ukraine and Israel. [Read More]

Joe Hill Finally Comes to San Francisco's City Lights
By Jonah Raskin, Counterpunch [February 2, 2024]
---- Everyone in San Francisco and beyond loves City Lights Bookstore and Publishing Company. At least every reader and bookish citizen or craves culture and community. Indeed, City Lights Bookstore and City Lights Publishing have long been hailed as exemplary countercultural institutions, so it comes as a surprise to learn that the workers at the store and the press are not now and have never been in a union. But that will soon change. Sixteen employees recently signed union-authorization cards and joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), aka The Wobblies, the legendary union that battled capitalism, corporations and the robber barons in the early 20th century. CFOW Newsletter - Support for Israel's War Rips Apart Biden's Winning Coalition

Concerned Families of Westchester Newsletter
January 28, 2024

Hello All – Of course we were warned.  The possibility of Trump Two has been coming at us since the last election.  The word is out that next time Trump will really be Trump: fascism, whatever, call it what we will.  As Trump rallied his troops on January 6th, he proclaimed that "it will be really wild."  Well, here we are.

For months now, and especially since the Biden people went whole hog for Israel's war on Palestinians, our confidence/hope that the worst wouldn't happen has been falling apart.  While there are dozens of things that "might happen" to derail the Trump campaign for President, based on "normal" election metrics, things look bad.  Biden is down in the polls, and each Trump legal defeat brings a spike in support and fundraising.  Are we doomed to a Trump presidency, some version of fascism, world environmental destruction, etc. etc.?

Our "whistling past the graveyard" confidence was built on the apparent solidity of a pro-Democratic voting base composed of working-class Americans, African-Americans, women, and young people.  While not monolithic, these voting blocks are the most politically active in the US and have no reason to believe that Trump will be "good for them."  But will they vote for Biden (not abstain)?  Will they work for Biden?  Send him money?  Talk him up (and Trump down) at work?  See him as a barrier to fascism?

Biden's winning coalition is in tatters.  The main fault line runs along Biden's refusal to call for an immediate ceasefire in the war on Gaza, and the Biden administrations to do just about everything in their power to support the war – money, weapons, and diplomatic cover at the UN and in institutions (such as NATO) where the US calls the shots.

The war is getting worse and will get worse until it stops.  Famine looms.  The International Court of Justice considers Israeli genocide. The battlefield spreads to Yemen, Lebanon, and today Iraq/Iran.  Each day of delay means not only hundreds of casualties and the suffering of hundreds of thousands, but more time lost before applying the brakes can be effective.  Every day of fighting increases the chances of a Biden defeat in November.

Some Reading on the Late, Great, Biden Winning Coalition

Black Pastors Pressure Biden to Call for a Cease-Fire in Gaza
By
---- As the Israel-Hamas war enters its fourth month, a coalition of Black faith leaders is pressuring the Biden administration to push for a cease-fire — a campaign spurred in part by their parishioners, who are increasingly distressed by the suffering of Palestinians and critical of the president's response to it. More than 1,000 Black pastors representing hundreds of thousands of congregants nationwide have issued the demand. In sit-down meetings with White House officials, and through open letters and advertisements, ministers have made a moral case for President Biden and his administration to press Israel to stop its offensive operations in Gaza, which have killed thousands of civilians. They are also calling for the release of hostages held by Hamas and an end to Israel's occupation of the West Bank. [Read More]

The American Jewish Left in Exile
By David Klion, New York Review of Books [January 28, 2024]
---- In 2010, about a year into Barack Obama's first term as president and Benjamin Netanyahu's second as prime minister, Peter Beinart observed that a significant divide was opening between younger American Jews and their elders over support for Israel. … One sign of this generational divide is the increased visibility of young, left-wing, anti-Zionist American Jews—a cohort to which I and many of my friends belong. For months our most prominent representatives have been two activist groups calling for a ceasefire in Gaza: IfNotNow (INN) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Broadly speaking, these groups reject Israel as the central focus of American Jewish life, and do so explicitly as Jews. They draw on language, symbolism, and values rooted in the rich and at times suppressed history of left-wing Jewish radicalism, which peaked before the State of Israel was founded and Zionism became central to diasporic Jewish identity.https://archive.ph/dcdz4

Israel's Victory in Gaza turns Pyrrhic as a Majority of Youths and Democrats brand it Genocidal
By Juan Cole, Informed Comment [January 26, 2024]
---- Israel is losing its campaign against Gaza not so much on the battlefield — though it is unclear that very many of its military goals have been accomplished — but in the court of public opinion. The Israeli far right has long ignored such PR setbacks, convinced that as long as the US government protects it at the United Nations, it retains impunity. The Biden administration cannot, however, veto public opinion. A new You.gov opinion poll finds that 34% of Americans believe Israel is committing a genocide against the Palestinians of Gaza. Moreover, it isn't just that a third of Americans believe there is an ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza. An absolute majority — 55% — of Americans aged 18 to 30 see it as a genocide. [Read More]

SEIU Becomes Largest US Union to Demand Gaza Cease-Fire
By Jessica Corbett, Common Dreams [January 22, 2024]
---- With over 25,000 Palestinians killed so far in the U.S.-backed Israeli assault of the Gaza Strip, the Service Employees International Union on Monday became the largest union in North America to join a growing coalition of labor groups calling for a cease-fire. … The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the United States, welcomed the cease-fire demand from SEIU, which followed similar calls from the United Auto Workers; American Postal Workers Union; United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America; and various other unions. Israel and Gaza, a Few Years From Now
By Amira Hass, Haaretz [Israel] [January 22, 2024]
---- A few years from now, a new father will hug his baby, his first son, and all of a sudden he will be rocked by a memory: a father carrying a baby in his hands, beside him a woman with her hair covered with a hijab and two or three children, all walking south with hundreds of others among shards of asphalt, piles of sand, blurred by the dust being kicked up as they march. Smoke rises from a distance, a drone hums relentlessly above, bombs explode one after the other. The new father will remember how he – a soldier at the end of his compulsory service – called out over a loudspeaker to order that father ("You, in the green shirt, with the child") to walk toward the soldiers behind the mounds of earth, standing alongside tanks. Through the clouds of dust, he sees the father handing over his baby to the woman, and with his arms raised in the air, approaching the soldiers. It's a silent movie. If they said something to each other, the new father who was a soldier back then couldn't hear it. Perhaps at that moment of recollection he will tighten his embrace of his first son. Or perhaps, slightly alarmed, he will hurriedly place his son in the stroller and drink a glass of water as he wipes away the beads of sweat that suddenly dot his forehead. Or maybe he'll just smile and say to himself: We showed those sons of bitches what it means to slaughter us like sheep. And he'll kiss his son's forehead. [Read More]

The War on Gaza
The first US-Israeli joint war
By Gilbert Achcar, Le Monde Diplomatique [France] [January 22, 2024]
[FB – The statement of the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel must not commitment any acts that would contribute to genocide in Gaza.  The order also warned nations that might also be complicit in Israel's genocide to cease & desist.  As this article shows, the US has been "complicit" in Israel's genocide since Day One.]
---- The Israeli military forces' war on Gaza, following Hamas's 7 October attack, is the first Israeli war in which Washington is a cobelligerent. The US openly supports the war's proclaimed goal and is blocking calls for a ceasefire at the United Nations — all while providing arms and ammunition to Israel and acting to dissuade other regional actors from intervening in the conflict to help Hamas. … In the aftermath of 7 October, Washington decided to send two US carrier battle groups into the eastern Mediterranean, led by the aircraft carriers USS Eisenhower and USS Ford, a marine intervention unit, as well as an amphibian assault group led by the USS Bataan in the Black Sea and the USS Florida nuclear submarine, which carries cruise missiles. At the same time, Washington alerted its air bases in the region and urgently delivered military equipment to Israel, including missiles for the Iron Dome aerial defence system. Washington thus provided a regional cover to Israel, so that it could devote the bulk of its forces to a war against Gaza whose stated objective, from the outset, has been the eradication of Hamas.  [Read More]

Israel's Mainstream Brought Us to The Hague, Not Its Lunatic Fringes
By Gideon Levy, Haaretz [Israel] [January 28, 2024]
---- Isaac Herzog, Yoav Gallant, Israel Katz: Israel's president, defense minister and foreign minister. The president of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Joan Donoghue, chose to cite all three of them as evidence of suspicion of incitement to genocide in Israel. The judge did not cite the far-right fringes, neither Itamar Ben-Gvir nor Eyal Golan; neither retired generals Giora Eiland (let epidemics spread in Gaza) nor Yair Golan, the man of peace and diagnostician of processes (let Gaza starve). … The judges in The Hague diagnosed perfectly what we here refuse to admit: Israel's problem is its mainstream, not its lunatic fringes. It is the mainstream that brought us to The Hague, it is the mainstream that incited to genocide, after Israel convinced itself with unbelievable ease that after October 7 everything is permitted. Fortunately, in The Hague they seem to think differently, very differently. [Read More]

The International Court of Justice Ruling
International Court of Justice Rules That Israel Must Stop Killing Palestinians
By David Swanson, World BEYOND War, January 26, 2024
---- The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel must cease its warmaking in Gaza — cease committing and inciting genocidal acts — and that the case charging Israel with genocide must proceed. … Therefore, Israel must cease killing Palestinians. This was a make or break moment for international law, or rather a break or make-a-first-step moment. There is hope for the idea and reality of international law, but this is only a beginning. … Governments that have made statement in support of the case against genocide include Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, Bolivia, the 57 nations of the Organization of Islamic Countries, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Maldives, Namibia, and Pakistan, Colombia, Brazil, and Cuba. The "Other" Genocide Court Case
"I Have Lost Everything": In Federal Court, Palestinians Accuse Biden of Complicity in Genocide
By Alice Speri, The Intercept [January 26, 2024]
---- In a momentous day for the quest to keep Israel and its allies accountable for its brutal war on Gaza, members of leading Palestinian human rights groups, residents of Gaza, and Palestinian Americans argued in a U.S. District Court on Friday that the Biden administration should halt its financial and military support for Israel and uphold its obligations to prevent genocide. The arguments came in a lawsuit that the Center for Constitutional Rights, or CCR, filed in November against President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, charging them with complicity and failure to prevent the "unfolding genocide" in the occupied strip. Testifying either in person at the Oakland, California, courthouse or remotely from Palestine, the plaintiffs spoke for nearly three hours about the deliberate devastation wrought by Israel in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attacks.  [Read More]

A Wider War?
Biden Must Choose Between a Ceasefire in Gaza and a Regional War
By Medea Benjamin and Nicolas J. S. Davies, Code Pink [January 25, 2024]
---- In the topsy-turvy world of corporate media reporting on U.S. foreign policy, we have been led to believe that U.S. air strikes on Yemen, Iraq and Syria are legitimate and responsible efforts to contain the expanding war over Israel's genocide in Gaza, while the actions of the Houthi government in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran and its allies in Iraq and Syria are all dangerous escalations. In fact, it is U.S. and Israeli actions that are driving the expansion of the war, while Iran and others are genuinely trying to find effective ways to counter and end Israel's genocide in Gaza while avoiding a full-scale regional war. [Read More]

How is Gaza Offshore Gas Development Tied to the Israeli Invasion?
By Patrick Mazza, Counterpunch [January 26, 2024]

Mainstream Media
March Against Genocide Isn't News to New York Times
By Dave Lindorff, FAIR [Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting] [January 25, 2024]
---- Devoted New York Times readers are likely unaware that a huge protest was held in the nation's capital on Saturday, January 13, to protest Israel's wanton slaughter of tens of thousands of Gazan civilians, and to condemn "Genocide" Joe Biden's weapon shipments and diplomatic backing for Israel. The Times, despite having a huge bureau in Washington, DC, did not mention the event, even over the course of the following week. … By size alone, the rally deserved a story in the Times. But this wasn't just one isolated US demonstration; it was part of a global call for protest against the ongoing assault on Gaza, which by January 13 had killed nearly 24,000, 70% of the victims being women and children. Times editors were surely aware that large anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian demonstrations were occurring around the US and the world (Al Jazeera, 1/13/24).  Even more newsworthy than the number of demonstrators and simultaneous global actions was the reality that this was the second mass action in DC in two months. In both cases, the lead organizers were Palestinian or US Muslim pro-Palestinian organizations. [Read More]

The Climate Crisis
Slow Change Can Be Radical Change
By Rebecca Solnit, Literary Hub [January 11, 2024]
---- We are impatient creatures, impatient for the future to arrive and prone to forgetting the past in our urgency to have it all now, and sometimes too impatient to learn the stories of how what is best in our era was made by long, slow campaigns of change. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said that "the arc of history is long but it bends toward justice," but whichever way it bends you have to be able to see the arc (and I'm pretty sure by arc he meant a gradual curve, not an acute angle as if history suddenly took a sharp left). Sometimes seeing it is sudden, because change has been going on all along but you finally recognize it. … Another immense impact of this impatience and attention-span deficit comes when a political process reaches its end, but too many don't remember its beginning. At the end of most positive political changes, a powerful person or group seems to hand down a decision. But at the beginning of most were grassroots campaigns to make it happen. The change got handed up before it got handed down, and only the slow perspective, the long view, lets you see the power that lies in ordinary people, in movements, in campaigns that often are seen as unrealistic, extreme, aiming for the impossible at their inception. Our History
The Zapatista uprising, 30 years on
By Bernard Duterme, Equal Times [January 10, 2024] [h/t JG]
---- For more than two decades, in the absence of de jure autonomy, the rebels of Chiapas have exercised "de facto autonomy" in the organisation of daily life in their territory. They control a highly politically fragmented area roughly the size of Belgium where they are trying to build a "different world" that is radically democratic, "anti-capitalist" and independent of the Mexican state. The Zapatistas' critique of the dominant model is articulated through action and developed over time. Their new emancipatory perspective aimed at "redistribution and recognition" is expressed both in their form of self-governance that seeks to "command by obeying," as well as in their repeated intercontinental invitations to articulate struggles "from below and to the left". In its early days, the Zapatista rebellion was often compared to the Central American revolutionary movements of the 1970s and 1980s, either in an attempt to stigmatise it or to set it apart.
